Tim in CA,
You are absolutely correct in saying that "if our self worth is all about our net worth we will surely be prisoners to it." It is not the material things man (gender neutral) has but the character within that counts. One can give away millions to charities and not be charitable; i.e., doing it for show. And yet, one can be penneyless and have great charity; i.e., in his heart - giving of himself.
Look around you and study the current attitudes of our society. Our god has become money and our religion has become "Me-ism." "It's all about me!!!" Me, me, me, mine, mine, mine. I ask "what is your purpose in life?" and get the stare of a deer caught in the headlights of an automobile.
It greeves me to see how selfcentered our country has become. Rather than getting out and earnestly trying to make a difference, we find it easier to sit in the cocktail lounge, or whereever, and spew our acidic venom on others. "It's not my problem" "Let someone else handle it." "What, you want me to volunteer?" "You've got to be kidding, let the do gooders do it, I don't have the time." "The guy is trash." "He must be a commy." You get the idea.
Those that spew snide remarks about the man because he was a billionaire are just as much a snob as they claim the wealthy to be. Of course, I could have missed it. In the end, it will be the Great Architect of the Universe that will be his judge. May God have mercy on his soul.
